Benefits and Science of Licorice Roote

Licorice candy may be a favorite Western treat but the licorice root from which it is made goes far beyond a sweet indulgence. Licorice root has countless health benefits and has been used since prehistoric Europe, documented initially by the people of Ancient Greece. It has also been used in traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years, being helpful with many different ailments and symptoms.

Licorice root health benefits

There are more than 300 compounds in the licorice root plant, many of which are antibacterial, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory. Licorice root was cultivated in the past to be used as a treatment for respiratory issues, heart health, bladder and kidney health, skin lesions, and digestive issues.

Modern studies have shown that licorice root extract is an effective ingredient in products used to alleviate stomach discomfort. Licorice root extract has been found to lessen nausea, stomach discomfort, and heartburn in double-blind studies; all common symptoms for those with gastrointestinal issues. Licorice root extract may support the protective mucus in the digestive tract which helps prevent indigestion, as well as soothe inflammation.

However, licorice root has to be deglycyrrhizinated before being used in gastrointestinal products so as not to further irritate symptoms. A substance called glycyrrhizin is taken out of the licorice root extract in order to create a product that is safe for long-term use. We only use deglycyrrhizinated licorice root extract in our Digestive Relief & Repair Liquid Formula, so you can be sure you are using a safe and effective measure to combat stomach upset.
